BRENT MARKS MAKES IT TWO STRAIGHT WITH PA SPEEDWEEK WIN AT BAPS

YORK HAVEN, PA -  It seems Brent Marks has a good handle on being a more consistent contender for wins, especially at BAPS Motor Speedway.

Marks captured the May 2 Kevin Gobrecht Classic, which made him one of the favorites coming into Sunday’s Pennsylvania Speedweek event, the first in 15 years at the speedway. And he didn’t disappoint.

The Myerstown, Pa., ace made it look easy against some stiff competition. He started on the pole and went unchallenged in leading all 30 Laps to capture Round 3 of Pennsylvania Speedweek at BAPS Motor Speedway.

“It’s really awesome and really special to do what we are doing right now, especially in my own car,” Marks said. “It’s a very unreal moment, and I’m really happy with the way things are going.

“We have that consistency thing going that I’ve been working so hard to get. I just have to keep it up, so we will keep working hard and try to get better.”

Continued Marks, “I thought we were really good all race long, but there were times I thought we were off a little and areas we still need to work on. It’s just a very special moment for me and my family.”

T.J. Stutts didn’t make it easy at the start. He fought Marks going into Turn 1, and the two raced side-by-side through the second corner. Marks pulled ahead of the backstretch and led the first circuit.

Marks wasted little time opening up a sizable 2.161-second lead by the time Lap 5 was scored. Meanwhile, Stutts had to deal with Justin Peck, who started fourth on the grid. Two laps later, Peck took the position with a slider through the first and second corner.

Lapped traffic became an issue on Lap 10. And yet, Marks was able to negotiate it with ease and still maintain his lead.

The daring move came on Lap 12, when Marks split the backmarkers of Skylar Gee and Chase Dietz heading into Turn 3. It allowed Marks to up his advantage to 2.5 seconds over the rest of the field.

“The moves I’m making seem to be working for me,” Marks said. “I’m just out there wheeling this thing and trying to be as aggressive as I can and make those moves as quick as I can, especially when you are the leader.

“The guy who is second is always in prime position when you are in lapped traffic. I just know that when I have a run on somebody, I’ve got to make that move as soon as possible. It just seems to be working out for me.”

Ryan Smith entered the picture on Lap 14, when he surged past Stutts to take third. One lap later, Devon Borden blew a tire going down the frontstretch and needed a tow back to the pit area. He was able to rejoin the field.

The restart was anticlimactic. Peck ripped around the top of Turns 1 and 2, but he couldn’t overtake Marks, who opened up a 1.592 second lead within five laps.

Marks was on cruise control around the top the rest of the way and earned his second straight victory.

As for Peck, he blew a tire in the fourth corner and fell to 11th. Ryan Smith drove by to get second, with Sam Hafertepe Jr. taking third.  J.J. Grasso and Anthony Macri completed the top five.

“We were good, Ryan Smith said. “We probably could have been a little tighter, but all and all, I could run the top, through the middle on the restart, and the bottom was coming in at the end. We were just a second or third-place car. To be on the podium here after two top 20s, it’s a good momentum builder.”

Kenny Edkin topped the field in a caution-filled 25-Lap Super Sportsman feature. It was his fourth straight win at the speedway.

John Edkin led the first six circuits before Kenny Edkin blew by to take the lead. There was no touching the leader the rest of the way, and he earned his 27th-career victory at BAPS Motor Speedway.

At the finish, it was John Edkin in second. Tyler Wolford, Scott Dellinger, and Matt Ondek completed the top five. Frankie Herr finished seventh and won Hard Charger honors.
